BRONX QUICKLY RECOVERS FROM IRENE FLOODING, MAYHEM

The Bronx bounced back from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene Monday, with commuters riding the reopened subway system and work crews cleaning fallen trees from Kingsbridge to Soundview.
The summer squall buffeted the borough on Sunday, flooding waterfront neighborhoods and claiming the life of Jose Sierra, 68, who drowned in the waters off City Island.
But the Bronx suffered less damage than expected, as the tempest weakened before slamming the borough.

More  than 90 students waving purple pompoms and carrying signs were  protesting Gov. Cuomo’s plan to slash state funding to 11 schools for  the blind, deaf and severely disabled. A column of yellow ponchos trudged down a rainy E. Tremont Ave. in Throgs Neck Wednesday - deaf students marching to save their schools.

More than 90 students waving purple pompoms and carrying signs were protesting Gov. Cuomo’s plan to slash state funding to 11 schools for the blind, deaf and severely disabled. In the Bronx the schools include St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf, the Lavelle School for the Blind and New York Institute for Special Education.

BRONX-BORN COMEDIAN LEAVES LEGACY OF LAUGHTER

Comedy fans from New York to Los Angeles knew Mike DeStefano as a  foul-mouthed funnyman from the Bronx who overcame heroin addiction to  become a standup star.
But the people closest to DeStefano knew  him as a goofball from Vincent Ave., a loving son and a man who healed  souls as a drug and HIV/AIDS counselor.
DeStefano died of a heart attack last Sunday at his mother’s home in Throgs Neck. He was 44.
